![]() The songs….boring one dimensional two or three chord ramblings. Most of the time the songs seem like they will collapse on themselves. There is interplay between the musicians but not them and Van. The musicians seem detached from the songs. Van’s description of the studio proceedings are telling. I love many of Van’s albums but this one has never resonated with me. Ladies and gentlemen I give you Astral Weeks by Van Morrison. And the result is one of the greatest albums ever made…well not at least until 1979 when a top critic tells the world how much they are missing if they don’t get this album and it is one of the greatest ever. Van goes into a separate recording booth with his guitar and the rest of the musicians go to another room and the two never talk or discuss what is going on. I guess Van did not know what ensemble playing was at that point in his career. He gets a contract with Warner Brothers goes into the studio and tells the hired jazz musicians to do what they want but “just don’t get in my way”. I am sure I will get it good on this one.Ī little history…Van is broke and has some half finished tunes. I saw one of my old "rarely listens to" threads resurrected the other day so I thought I would do a few more.
